Sacred Scrolls and Meditative Art

Jamyang Dorjee, a renowned practitioner of Dharma calligraphy, has brought the sacred Pemakathang—Guru Padmasambhava’s hallowed biography—to life through the intricate and meditative art of traditional Kyug script. Spanning 108 chapters and 550 pages, this monumental endeavor is not merely an artistic achievement but a profound act of devotion and spiritual practice.

In 2024, Jamyang Dorjee completed a remarkable 37-meter scroll of the Pemakathang on handmade paper. This masterpiece was sanctified with blessings from Kyabji Lachung Rinpoche and the Sangha during the Lieudun Bumtherma Monlam Chenmo at Sangchen Pemayangtse Monastery, West Sikkim—a site deeply revered in Vajrayana Buddhism. Following its consecration, this sacred work was offered to His Eminence Verochana Rinpoche, the recognized incarnation of Lochen Verochana, in Bhutan, the last standing Vajrayana Buddhist kingdom. As Jamyang Dorjee reflects on the spiritual significance of his calligraphy journey, he shares his aspirations for new projects. Currently, he is embarking on two sacred undertakings: a 6-meter scroll and a 150-page pecha (traditional Tibetan text). Both will be rendered in miniature Kyug script, an intricate form of writing that demands extraordinary precision and meditative focus. These works will mark the culmination of his aspiration to transcribe the Pemakathang three times, a symbolic and spiritual milestone.

“The act of writing sacred texts is both a meditative journey and a spiritual offering,” Dorjee explains. “May these works benefit all sentient beings.” Alt text for your image
