Tibetan brushstrokes

A total of 35 pieces of Tibetan calligraphy by renowned artist Jamyang Dorjee Chakrishar are on display at “Yig-tsal: Calligraphy Art Of Tibet”, at Serindia Gallery until Sept 30.

Held in collaboration with the Paccaya Foundation, this is the first time the Sikkimese artist, who has transformed Tibetan handwriting into beautiful art, has brought his works to Bangkok.

Jamyang is a master of Himalayan Buddhist art, and studied under masters Geshe Lobsang Tharchin and Prof Samdhong Rinpoche in Shimla, India. His work focuses on the u-med style, in which brushworks freely represent the depth, flexibility and artistic flavour of Tibetan calligraphy.

His other innovation is the depiction of Buddhist deities in miniature calligraphy. They are unique and much-appreciated by Buddhist masters, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The 63-year-old calligrapher holds the world record for longest calligraphy scroll, using handmade Tibetan lokta paper measuring 163m in length. The scroll contains 65,000 Tibetan characters, featuring prayers for the Dalai Lama by 33 masters of Tibet.

Serindia Gallery is at OP Garden 4, Charoen Krung 36, and is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am-7pm.
